Happy holidays!
As 2020 comes to a close I want to offer a few simple thoughts that have been impactful to me as I reflect back on this year. Consider how you can apply these ideas both in your daily professional life but also in your daily personal life.
Understanding bias
Seek to understand your own biases (with compassion). Over time, this results in us understanding (with compassion) that other people form their values and opinions from their own limited life experiences, just like you. While keeping this front of mind, your relationships and your happiness will grow exponentially. Remember this one for 2021. We all could have used more of this in a very challenging 2020.
Simplify
Day to day, week to week, month to month, simplify what you think about and do. Focus on diving in deep on 1-2 things at a time. Seek depth, seek quality, seek mastery. There’s an increasing amount of research being done by neuroscientists that show we humans can’t multitask. Only one thing gets our attention at a time, and the more you try and split your thoughts across many things, the worse your cognitive ability becomes. So do yourself a favor and cut out the distractions.
Purpose
Many of us seek a sense of purpose and look for it in something that we do or that we create. Remember, it’s fun and rewarding to do or create things, but a real sense of purpose cannot be detached from serving other people. Yes it can start with doing or creating things for ourselves and that is meaningful, but think about who you can do or create something for in this next year that will foster a tighter relational bond with at least one other person. You’ll find your sense of purpose to be that much more meaningful and rewarding.
With peace and love, onward into 2021 we go!
