Why coaching propels your software career forward
A conversation with Python coach and co-founder of Pybites Bob Belderbos
Introducing recorded audio conversations
This is an exciting post for me because it’s my first experiment returning to a format that I love - recorded audio conversations.
I’ve produced a couple of podcasts in years past, unrelated to software engineering and coaching, but still something that was a labor of love for me.
In addition to being a big software geek, I’m also a big urban geek. I love walkable and highly livable towns and cities as much as I love creating software and partnering with software engineers as their coach.
I’m experimenting to determine if I want to produce a regular podcast, or just have an occasional recorded conversation using the inline audio that Substack provides and am using in this post.
To kick things off for my first conversation, I sat down with Bob Belderbos, software coach and co-founder of the excellent Python training and developer coaching organization Pybites.
Topics we discuss:
Bob’s career background and how he got to where he is today
What software engineer coaching is and how it benefits engineers like you
Why Bob and his co-founder Julian focus exclusively on Python
The importance of solving a real problem with a real software project outside of your day job
Why it’s critically important to develop your mindset in certain soft and human-to-human skills if you want to progress in your technical career (now more than ever with the increasing prevalence of AI)
What is Pybites’ mission and what kinds of engineers do they serve best?
Pybites’ coaching program offerings for developers focused on Python, PDI and PDM
Some comparisons to the software coaching that I do
And other topics…

What do you think of the recorded audio conversation format. Do you want to see more of this kind of thing? Is there anyone you would want to see me interview on a certain topic relating to becoming a more effective software engineer? Let me know in the comments or feel free to message me on Substack.
Thanks for reading and listening!
Please enjoy.
