Did this question have a response? asking for a friend.

"But why is it important for an EM who isn’t loving people management within their first year or two to make a change to an IC role again and how might someone make this transition well?"

This is Erica. I'm happy to answer this great question.

IMHO, the reason it is important is because life is too short to spend a long time doing work (or anything) that you don't enjoy. You do yourself and your team/company a disservice by staying in a role you don't enjoy.

To the second question - I recommend speaking with your manager (or HR) to start the transition process. Be honest about your experiences in people management and your preferred role, get clear parameters around how to start the transition process, and patiently follow that process through to completion (typically, I've seen this take between 30 and 90 days to complete).

I also recommend that you work closely with the new manager and the team to help everyone ease into the transition and that you have conversations with your team members before you make the transition (after the plan has been created) so that no one is left speculating about the change.

Finally, I highly recommend that you take at least a week off between the end of the management role and the start of the IC role to give yourself time to reset.

I hope that helps "your friend." :-)
